Preparedness is the Key to Business Resilience as Threat Actors Get Smarter

Over the past few months, sophisticated cyber attackers holding big organisations’ data for ransom has been the talk of the town. More than ever, customers are becoming more concerned about whether their personal and sensitive information is in safe hands while businesses are facing the reality that they too, can fall victim at any moment.

In a moment of serendipity, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) released its Annual Cyber Threat Report this month. The annual report reinforces the importance of making online resilience and cyber security a priority across industry, small business, and government.

Cyber security trends identified in the Annual Cyber Threat Report by the ACSC

In the face of growing threat vectors, it’s easy to feel defeated and say ‘well, there’s nothing we can do about cyberattacks when it’s no longer a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ it happens.’

However, if I can pass on any wisdom from the many years of working in the cyber security space, it is that preparedness is always the key to business resilience. It’s about what you do with what you know.

Always be on the defense by turning intelligence into preparedness

In today’s threat environment, always strive to be one step ahead. Businesses need to anticipate threats and be prepared to defend against them at any given time. It’s not worth taking a chance on security when we know that cyber threats are on the way up. ACSC reported a 13 per cent increase in cybercrime reports and an increase in overall financial losses as a result of cybercrime in the last financial year.

Business leaders need to review their cyber security posture to ensure all aspects of their business are covered. Establish what the key security priorities are by engaging information security experts to analyse which threats present the highest risk to your organisation From there, you can decide what tools, platforms or services will best mitigate vulnerabilities and get ahead risk.

At Sekuro, we refer to this as threat modeling. By converting knowledge into strategic, comprehensive cyber responses, businesses can turn preparedness into resilience and stay one step ahead of threats.

Build resilience to move forward no matter what

As modern day businesses become more digitally connected, the opportunities for malicious cybercrime is ever-growing. In this evolving threat environment, the best cyber security strategies are resilient ones. Organisations need to balance proactive, preventative measures with incident response solutions so that the business remains resilient in the face of any attack.

The reality is that it is not possible to eliminate the risks altogether, so steps to ensure your business bounces back no matter what cannot be an afterthought. Afterall, when a data breach happens, the onus falls on the company involved to manage and mediate the damages. And be knownst to us all, there are real consequences for businesses that fail to effectively manage cyber security incidents.

In fact, the ACSC report reminds companies that “boards should consider cyber resilience as part of their statutory responsibilities.” As part of overall business planning, early testing of disaster recovery and business continuity plans will go a long way in ensuring the business is prepared for anything.
